My friend Dave hurt his left knee playing squash (like racquetball) suffering a grade 1 medial collateral ligament tear. He kept on playing and 2 weeks later had right knee cap pain (patella femoral syndrome, PFS), a pre-arthritis condition. And he's still playing through his knee pain. That's how one ends up later in life with knee arthritis.

If you develop knee pain the rule is "Don't Train with Pain." Modify your activities or workouts so that your knee doesn't hurt. Also remember you want to strengthen with knee exercises until your strength is back to at least 80% of normal.

If you can't train without pain, then rest and arrange for proper physical therapy and knee rehabilitation. The message- Training with Pain Leads to Knee Cartilage Damage and Arthritis Later In Life. Heal Your Knee Pain First!
