High Heels May Cause Knee Arthritis
By Dr. Paul Anderson M.D. Sports and Pain Medicine Expert
Here's an interesting article on high heels causing knee arthritis. For years, we knew that high heels can lead to bunions which are arthritis of the first toe.
But now there is research that suggests high heels may also cause arthritis in ankles, knees, hips and back according to the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists said recently The BBC reported that arthritis, more frequent in women, can be aggravated by wearing high heels.
The footwear alters the body’s posture and increases pressure on the foot, ankle and knee joints, experts said, leading to an increased risk of osteoarthritis. A quarter of women reportedly wear high heels either frequently or daily, a Society poll of 2,000 people reported.
The poll further found that up to 77 percent of both men and women don’t wear shoes designed specifically for the sport in which they’re participating. This can actually cause knee injury and stress on the joint, also increasing risk for arthritis, the BBC said Professor Anthony Redmond, a researcher with the society, told the BBC that arthritis can occur at any age, and caution should therefore be taken.
“For daily wear, the recommendation is to opt for a round-toed shoe with a heel height of no more than [one inch] and with a shock-absorbent sole to help minimize shock to the joints,” he advised.
Redmond further warned that people, especially women, should not ignore pain in their feet or ankles, “as something can always be done.” It is particularly important because many forms of arthritis first start to show symptoms in the feet or ankles.
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of the arthritis, and causes pain and stiffness in the joints. It affects at least eight million people in the United Kingdom alone.
