Man Cures His Own Knee Pain Despite Wrong Medical Advice
By Dr. Paul Anderson M.D. Sports and Pain Medicine Expert
This is a tragic knee pain story with a happy ending despite wrong medical advice that recommend a completely unnecessary surgery . It all started when... RS, a 55 year old avid squash ( like racquetball) player suffered a knee injury during a game.
His symptoms were mild knee swelling and medial joint line pain. He was diagnosed with a medial meniscus tear and scheduled for an immediate knee arthroscopy.
That's not right! What happened to conservative care for a swollen knee?
A Prospective Study of the Nonoperative Treatment of Degenerative Meniscus Tears by Todd Rimington, MD; Krishna Mallik, MD; Douglas Evans, MD; Kenneth Mroczek, MD; Bruce Reider MD, recommended at least an initial 1-month course of nonoperative treatment for all patients with a clinical diagnosis of a degenerative medial meniscus tear prior to considering knee surgery.
In my clinical experience, approx. 90% of people with meniscal tears (with no knee locking) can avoid surgery, if properly treated with natural anti-inflammatories, ice, physical knee therapy and aggressive rehabilitation. Back to our story. RS consulted with me.
I recommended a conservative course of treatment- natural anti-inflammatories, ice, physical therapy and knee rehabilitation. He wisely ignored the knife-happy orthopedic surgeon's advice and instead started conservative measures.
Three months later, his knee was 95% improved and back out playing almost pain free. No knee surgery required! My advice - many times knee surgery is recommended for the wrong reasons, mis-diagnosis and is just plain too aggressive.
Often there are treatment options available to cure your knee pain that avoid surgery. If you have the option for conservative knee treatment - try it first!
